Commander gave the stable a winning double at Randwick after an earlier win to Sebring gelding Primitivo.
Primitivo showed plenty of ability to stay as he won over the 2000m, whilst stablemate Commander delivered a promising victory in the MOET & CHANDON GRAND VINTAGE MILE (1600m).
Ridden by Jay Ford, Primitivo settled in the second half of the field before being produced on the outside in the home straight where he showed a good turn of foot and went on to defeat Wu Gok by just under a length.
The pair have earned themselves a trip to Grafton for the club’s July Carnival with Primitvo taking aim at the Grafton Cup whilst Commander has the Grafton Guineas in his sights.
“He takes a bit of riding, Primitivo, and Jay [Ford] was really strong on him,” Thompson said. “He showed he is very strong, so a race like the Grafton Cup is coming at the right time for him. Commander, you don’t know which one is going to show up. If he was like that every time he went to the races, you would always be confident.”
